  • Cinnamon has been widely used for many centuries and it’s primarily known for its rich aroma, flavour and colour. Beyond those characteristics, this spice that originates from the bark of cinnamon trees is filled with properties, benefits and useful applications.

Cinnamon herbal tea or tisane is probably one of the best known uses for cinnamon. Just bring water to a boil and add the cinnamon to allow it to infuse. In our experience, just 5gr is enough to make a full standard size kettle.

The flavor is incredible, incomparable to industrially packed teas and it’s naturally sweet, so you really don't need to add sugar or anything else. Some like to mix it with ginger tea, and at Sombrero we always embrace creativity and cultural fusions.

If this is your first time using using natural cinnamon, you might think that you need to peel off the outer parts of the bark. There's no need for that, the entire product is usable, even the small pieces that might break away.

Of course, another very common use is to make desserts. Many things mind, cheesecake to cinnamon rolls, cookies to tarts, buns to all kinds of pastries and cakes. But because our heritage at Sombrero is Latino, we are going to give you the recipe for Arroz con Leche (aka, Rice Pudding).

This comforting and simple dessert is guaranteed to satisfy any sweet tooth. It can be served hot or cold and it's made with only 4 ingredients!

    Ingredients:

    2 Cinnamon Sticks

    1 Cup long-grain rice

    4 Cups milk (2%)

    1 Cup granulated sugar

Rice Pudding in 3 easy steps

    1. In a medium saucepan place the rice, cinnamon sticks, a pinch of salt and 2 cups of water. Cover it, bring water to a boil and cook until the ready is ready (Approximately 15 minutes).
    2. Turn down the heat to low-medium and add the milk, stir for 10 minutes.
    3. Finally, add the sugar and continue stirring to allow the sugar to dissolve. Once it’s thick, it’s ready to serve and enjoy!

Optional: add some powdered cinnamon on top for a little extra flavour and a nice decorative touch!

Here are 4 lesser known uses for cinnamon:

    • Decorative: you can use cinnamon sticks to make potpourri or use jute to wrap it around little candles. It looks great plus you get the amazing scent.
    • Cleaning:With the growing trend of using less chemicals at home, cinnamon is a great product to keep handy! Most DIY recipes include vinegar and orange, and some add water as well. The result is a natural all-purpose cleaner that will be both effective and leave your home smelling great.
    • Moth repellent: in a little cloth sachet you can combine cinnamon with cloves and peppercorn and place it in your closet.
    • Room freshener: this is another great alternative to chemical products that come in wasteful packaging. You can simply boil a few sticks on a pot and it will naturally leave your home smelling fresh and delicious. For an extended effect, you can boil the same same cinnamon a second time.

Lastly, we want to mention some of the health benefits that cinnamon is known for. Mostly, it’s recognized for naturally lowering blood sugar and secondly it’s known for its antifungal and antimicrobial properties.
